Welcome!
Troop 218
Matinecock District
Suffolk County Council
Huntington Station NY

Troop 218 meets every Wednesday night
at 7:30pm at Birchwood School

Last Minute Reminders
Then next Committee Meeting is scheduled for Sunday May 20th at 7pm. All parents are welcome to attend. Please see Mrs. Trifon if you plan to attend to assure seating.

Attending committee meetings is the first step in getting involved with your son's experience in scouting. HELP FROM PARENTS IS ALWAYS NEEDED!

Scouts and parents should review their scout handbook each week to see what they can work on for advancement. Read the sections of the handbook covering the material. At the troop meeting, see a member of the Senior Patrol and the Scoutmaster to review and sign off. How quickly a scout advances is determined by how hard he works on advancement.

Permission forms for ALL TRIPS have questions about driving and food and equipment. Forms must be filled out as COMPLETELY as possible when turned in.

Review your scout books with your patrol leader. See Mrs. Trifon regularly so troop advancement records are up to date. Have your book checked often so leaders know when you're ready to advance.

Please review all of these reminders BEFORE each Troop Meeting!

The Blue Cards handed out with your merit badges are IMPORTANT! If you plan to work toward Eagle, they will be needed. Please check the Blue Cards handed out at West Hills Court of Honor are signed in two places by your scoutmaster. See the scoutmaster if they are not.

New On Website

New Scouts
There's a lot of information on the web site that can help you and your parents get started with Troop 218. Here's a few things you should look at.

Scouts begin by earning the Scout Badge and work toward the Eagle Badge. Look at the "Advancement" section on the "Links" page to see what skills you'll be working on in each scout level. Look at the "Advancements" page to see the steps in signing off advancements. To get general information about camping, see the "Camping" section on the "Forms" page. Keep in touch by getting a copy of the roster from Mr. Gomez (Troop 218 does not publish contact information on our web site).

Remember, all scouts must have an up to date
Troop 218 Medical Form to participate in any trips!

Fundraising

Fundraising allows Troop 218 to buy much needed equipment such as tents, stoves, lanterns, etc. We also purchase supplies and refreshments for our two yearly Court of Honor ceremonies, Eagle Scout ceremonies, and special troop Christmas and year end pizza parties (other events and overnights usually have additional fees for participation and food). We hold fundraisers each year - Car Wash's during summer months and Candy/Soda/Water Sales at the South Huntington School Budget vote in May and Election day in November. We ask scouts to volunteer at each fundraiser. This will ensure we have enough manpower available and that the event will be a success. Also, it never hurts to have parents around to supervise and help out if necessary. Look for sign-up sheets at Troop meetings and check the website. Keep Scouting with Troop 218 affordable.

Community Service
In the Scout Oath, scouts promise "To help other people at all times". Community service is an important part of Boy Scouts. Troop 218 organizes activities for our scouts, including visits to retirement facilities, veterans hospital, taking part in Scouting for Food and other programs. If you have an idea for a community service event, or want to do more to help our community, come to a troop committee meeting and talk about your idea.

Why volunteer in scouting?
"A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove. But the world may be different, because I was important in the life of a boy"

Forrest Witcraft
